Holding a B.A. (Hons) and a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University. Ho is an artist, curator and educator. Being the Co-founder and President of EJAR, he has a proven track record in establishing and managing art collective and art spaces, organizing impactful cultural events, he also initiates teaching methodologies in various educational institutions in Hong Kong, and fostering community engagement through diverse range of art disciplines. In his personal artistic practice, HO's drawings and paintings coherently experiment on formal and textual qualities with complex layering in order to study the materialities, spatialities, textures and gradations of depth, strokes and marks-making. In HO's expressions between abstract and figurative approaches, he invokes repetitiveness, improvisations and religious-like symbols as recurring elements with the concern of philosophical and cultural contexts to reflect spirituality, significance, possibilities and imageries of “Self” as the subject matter. In the past 10+ years, such methodology has been actualised by HO progressively, extending his representations into the realms of sound-making, performance, installation and undefined expressions, etc. As both an individual creator and a member of the artist collective EJAR, he believes, embraces and aspires to bridging the fields of arts development, cultural concerns, public &amp; community engagement, education, and creative work through diverse yet effective communication and outreach initiatives. With grants and support by official organisations and private corporations, HO implements creative works and projects in Hong Kong, China, Japan, Australia, the United States, Portugal, Netherlands, Finland,etc. Shek Po Kwan Shek Po Kwan, born in Hong Kong in 1988, is a photographer and cultural catalyst whose career weaves local roots with global threads. Studed photography in KTVTC, After three formative years at the JOIN ART studio, he spent 2011–2014 at Fabrica Communication Research Centre in Italy, where he excelled as a photographer and consultant in the design department under Sam Baron and social campaign department under Erik Ravelo. There, he contributed to visually striking campaigns—likely including Benetton’s "Unhate" initiative—honing his ability to fuse photography with social impact. Returning to Hong Kong, Shek established himself as a "Perception Sailor" and "Photon Observer," his photography reflecting a profound engagement with light and experience (shekpokwan.com) . In 2020, amid Hong Kong’s unrest, he conceived the Eastern Jade Art Renaissance (EJAR), inviting artists to co-found a collective aimed at cultural renewal. Inspired by jade’s symbolism and Fabrica’s free spirit with creative mind, Shek envisioned EJAR as a platform for dialogue and resilience, leveraging his global insights and collaborative instincts. Gavin Yip Yip Chun Kit, Gavin (b. 1988) is a Hong Kong-based visual artist and musician known for his oil paintings that explore the nuances of everyday life. Gavin graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University. As a painter, Gavin specializes in figurative oil painting, drawing inspiration from the events, people and situations of daily existence. His works capture emotional depth behind everyday moments, often address subtle relationships between his painting subjects and himself. Gavin also serves as the guitarist for the Hong Kong-based band David Boring. Through both his art and music, Gavin continues to explore and express the complexities of human condition, carving a space for himself as a multidisciplinary artist. Gavin is also a founding member of EJAR. Dino Rib Dino Rib (a.k.a. Wong Lok Hin) was born and raised in Hong Kong. Dino graduated from the Faculty of Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and completed his Master’s Degree at the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University. He is an educator of art / media / cinema-related programmes at different institutions. As a media-based artist, he is concerned with performance, abstraction and visual representation in arts. Since 2020, he has started creative projects concerning Hong Kong History, related to how humans perceive / "make-sense of" / memorize reality and the coping mechanisms towards it. During thethree-week residency, Shun has created a "two-sided heroic" character for herself toeliminate the daily unpleasantness she has been dealing with. The whole ironictransformative process manifests in performative actions and site-specific video installation,where her bodily expressions serve as a powerful commentary on the complexity andirresistibility of her confrontation in everyday's challenges. The formulated constructive installation plays as the vestige where the room is calminglyempty, yet one can experience the unspeakable sense of suppression and powerlessness.The artist’s body, as the carrier, has always borne the brunt of cruelty and mercilessness asinevitable rebound — sometimes entertaining, sometimes self-destructive, sometimesreflective, and most of the time contradictory. From the video, we see the artist's intention ofbalancing her binary opposition through bodily expression: spontaneity out of the regulatedcontext represents a gesture of resistance; repetitive movement as motif and as obscuresymbol can only be associated under the artist's personal subtle framework. The everyday'schallenges of the artist's situation might not necessarily be described or shared accurately,yet fear and feeling of uncomfortability could be universal to all of us. Look. In this space: Objects for the fragmented testimony, fragments misplaced. Bodies perform what words cannot. Screens flicker with what once was. * "Look, Vanilla" Noir says. "Look, Noir" Vanilla says. During the four-week residency at EJAR, Davidhas been exploring the contours of found objects, reshaping them through his unique texturalperception. The organic, hand-built sculptural forms and distorted, symbol-like patterns whichmostly created at the venue, represent a reimagined expression of his unconsciousinterpretation. At this stage of his dynamic artistic productivity, it may be more relevant and engaging toappreciate the forms as a self-contained, often self-referenced system of symbols, and we valuetheir impactful physicality more than attempting to decipher their conceptual intentions. EnteringDavid's working scene is akin to embarking on an experiential journey through an unclassifiedancient monument or a testament to his own burgeoning civilization. The wall paintings adornedwith symbols provoke a totemic association, along with the archaeological-like spatial layoutfeaturing half-organic / half-manmade objects, evoke themes of humanity, religiousness,spirituality, ritual, and the occult. Jun 2024 // DOWNSIDE UP, OUTSIDE IN: A Curatorial Statement This exhibition, DOWNSIDE UP, OUTSIDE IN, takes as its starting point a world turned inside out, a reality where the familiar is rendered strange. The exhibition marks the 3rd artist-in-residency programme of EJAR, which showcases 6 artists’ works after a 3-week stay at the site. The exhibition offers a glimpse into the insights, efforts, research and fantasies that drive these artists in the form of installation, which provokes awareness towards the physicality of representation(s). It is an invitation to embrace the unfamiliar, to find solace in uncertainty, and to discover the profound connections that bind us, even as the world turns upside down. The artists featured in DOWNSIDE UP, OUTSIDE IN embrace this flux. Their work invites us to engage in a fluxing contemplation, a space where the boundaries between "outside in" and "inside-out" dissolve.&nbsp; Through their chosen mediums, they grapple with the hybrid intersections of uncertainty, physicality, reality, filiality, and religiosity. These themes, while seemingly disparate, are revealed to be subtly interconnected. The artists, through their individual practices, unearth unexpected connections and shared unsettledness. This shared space of creation fosters a sense of bonding, a platform for dialogue and understanding. We exist in a state of downside up all along, facing an unshakable impermanence that defies easy categorization. The tarot deck lays bare the course of life in the past, present, and future, its readings a guide to the journey of artistic creation. In moments of respite, is it possible to recover from pain and trauma, to liberate and continue moving forward? By removing the sole narration from the visual documentary, and through the common language of symbols, the artist wishes to curate a unique piece of artwork which the audience can resonate with to Kong, everything in the cityscape is constantly undergoing changes. The only familiar constant is this unpredictable subtropical climate.” In this series of paintings completed between autumn 2021 and summer 2023, the artist Wong Sze Chit draws inspiration from the ever-changing cultural elements encountered in his daily life, particularly drawn from his interests in video games, electronic music, literature and folk beliefs, then blends them into the atmosphere of the urban subtropical climate to create a series of works that burst with vitality. In Wong's art world, everything has an anima, and even a current of air can possess a will. This natural reverence for nature and inner experience constructs the surrealist fantasy world in his art. Imbued with a childlike perspective, the series has a recurring theme —— the mythical figures from folk beliefs, such as dragons from the ocean and the phoenixes from the skies, serve as the sacred symbols of folklore with intimate emotional significance to the artist. In an era where ever-changing new cultures are permeating every aspect of life, the painter recreates the impressions of modernity by reimagining these unique myths. With the bold brushstrokes and vibrant colors, Wong emphasizes an intuitive expression that presents a sense of graffiti-like immediacy, and a super-flat sense of space. In some paintings, the various elements collide and layer with each other, bringingforth a reminiscent of the overwhelming information flow in modern life.
